In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a sophisticated procedure used to achieve fertilization in a controlled laboratory setting. The process begins with the retrieval of mature oocytes (eggs) from the ovaries, which are then fertilized by sperm in a Petri dish.

The resulting fertilized eggs, or embryos, are cultivated in an incubator before one or more are transferred to the uterus on either day 3 or day 5 post-fertilization. IVF is recognized as the most effective form of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) and can involve using either your own eggs or donor eggs, alongside your partner’s sperm or donor sperm.

IVF is typically recommended after other fertility treatments have not succeeded. Additionally, through techniques such as embryo biopsy and pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT-A and PGT-M), we can assess embryos for genetic abnormalities, enhancing the success of your Assisted Reproductive Technology journey.

Do I require IVF?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) can effectively tackle a range of infertility issues, making parenthood achievable, especially when other treatments have not been successful. It’s important for individuals to consult with a fertility specialist to understand their specific situation and explore the best treatment options within Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Common causes of infertility requiring IVF:

  • Age-Related Factors
    • Female Age: As women age, the quantity and quality of eggs decline, making conception more challenging.
    • Male Age: Older men may experience reduced sperm quality.
  • Ovulatory Disorders
    • Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can disrupt regular ovulation, making it difficult to conceive.
  • Fallopian Tube Damage or Blockage
    • Previous infections, surgeries, or endometriosis can lead to damage or blockages in the fallopian tubes, preventing eggs from meeting sperm.
  • Endometriosis
    • This condition, where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, can affect the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and overall reproductive function.
  • Male Factor Infertility
    • Issues such as low sperm count, poor motility, or abnormal morphology can impact a man’s ability to conceive. IVF with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is a common and effective Assisted Reproductive Technology solution for male factor infertility.
  • Unexplained Infertility
    • In some cases, no specific cause can be identified, even after thorough testing.
  • Genetic Factors
    • Certain genetic abnormalities, including sickle cell disease, can affect fertility and are sometimes addressed through IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT).

IVF Procedure Basics: An Overview of Our Process

The IVF process consists of multiple steps designed to facilitate the journey to parenthood. Here’s an overview of the NETCARE IVF procedure:

1. Ovarian Stimulation

  • Hormonal medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs instead of the single egg that typically matures each month. This process is monitored through blood tests and ultrasounds.

2. Egg Retrieval

  • Once the eggs are ready for harvest, a minor surgical procedure is performed to retrieve them. This is usually done using a thin needle guided by ultrasound, and it can be done under sedation or anesthesia.

3. Sperm Collection

  • On the same day as the egg retrieval, a sperm sample is collected from a partner or a sperm donor. The sperm is then processed in the lab to isolate the healthiest and most motile sperm.

4. Fertilization

  • The retrieved eggs are combined with the sperm in a laboratory setting. Fertilization can occur through traditional insemination or through a method called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg.

5. Embryo Culture

  • The fertilized eggs, now called embryos, are monitored for several days (typically 3 to 5) as they develop. Embryologists evaluate their growth and quality.

6. Embryo Transfer

  • One or more healthy embryos are selected for transfer into the uterus. This is a simple procedure done using a thin catheter, typically without anesthesia.

7. Luteal Phase Support

  • Hormonal medications may be prescribed to support the uterine lining and enhance the chances of implantation.

8. Pregnancy Test

  • About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is conducted to check for pregnancy.
