Hormone Testing

Hormone Testing

Hormones are a regulatory chemical substance produced by glands in the endocrine system in your body to regulate a wide range of bodily functions, including reproductive processes. When it comes to fertility, both male and female hormones are crucial for achieving pregnancy. At Netcare IVF|Fertility, hormone testing is a crucial component of fertility evaluation for both women and men, as it helps our reproductive endocrinology and fertility specialists, Prof. Olagbuji and Osai, and Dr Emmanuel—in identifying underlying hormonal imbalances that can affect fertility and assessing whether hormone treatments might enhance your chances of conceiving a child.

To learn more about how your or your partner’s hormonal imbalances such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, and hypogonadism might be impacting your ability to conceive, reach out to us today to schedule a consultation at our practice.

Hormone Testing for Women

Each month, a woman’s hormones get her body ready for conception, and any irregularities in her menstrual cycle might signal a hormonal imbalance that could impact her ability to conceive. Here’s a summary of key hormones related to female fertility and their roles:

  • FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Essential for the growth of follicles (eggs) in the ovaries. Measures ovarian reserve. Elevated levels may indicate issues with ovarian function and decreased fertility.

  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Essential for the maturation of follicles (eggs) in the ovaries. Helps assess ovulation and overall hormonal balance.

  • Estradiol: Primarily produced by the ovaries and plays a key role in the development and release of eggs during ovulation. Evaluates the function of the ovaries and the health of the eggs. Imbalances in estradiol levels can affect menstrual cycles and fertility.

  • Progesterone: Prepares the uterus for implantation of a fertilized egg and supports early pregnancy. Indicates ovulation and the health of the uterine (womb) lining. Imbalances in progesterone levels can affect menstrual cycles and fertility.

  • AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone): A marker of ovarian reserve; higher levels indicate a larger pool of healthy and recruitable (viable) eggs.

  • Prolactin: A Hormone that can lead to numerous reproductive dysfunctions if produced in excess. Primarily known for its role in lactation, but elevated levels can suppress ovulation and menstrual cycles in women, leading to infertility.
Androgens, produced in small amounts by the ovaries and adrenal glands.

  • Thyroid hormones (TSH, T3, and T4): Thyroid Hormones Regulate metabolism and are important for normal reproductive function. Thyroid disorders, such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism, can impact fertility.

Hormone Testing for Men

Evaluate and Enhance Your Reproductive Potential Through Semen Analysis

Male hormone testing is an integral part of a broader fertility evaluation, ensuring that both partners’ health is considered in infertility cases. In contrast to common belief, infertility isn’t solely a female issue. Men are solely responsible for 20% of cases of infertility, and infertility in men is a contributing factor in another 30% to 40% of all infertility cases, often linked to hormonal imbalances. Male infertility usually arises from problems with semen and sperm quality, such as low sperm count, poor motility, and a high percentage of abnormal or ineffective sperm. Testing and treating hormone levels in men can help restore a healthy balance in reproductive hormones. These assessments typically evaluate:

  • Testosterone which is produced by the testes to stimulate sperm formation and motility.
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulates the production of sperm.
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH) stimulates the testes to produce testosterone.
